According to I Corinthians 13, love is greater than hope and faith in its longevity and duration. The Corinthians Christians were placing more emphasis on spiritual gifts than on loving one another. Paul saw this as a detriment to their obeying the command to love God and to love people when Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-39 that the greatest commandment is to, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself." In other words, Jesus' response to the Pharisee’s question of which is greatest commandment in the law was, "love God and love people." Loving God and loving people go hand in hand. We cannot love God without loving people. According to 1 John 4:20, we cannot love God who we have not seen and hate our brother who we see everyday.
